Are fruit butters and jams the same thing?

I would say they’re related but not the same thing. Jams and jellies require pectin usually and they’re more clarified.

Fruit butters (like this peach butter recipe) are more opaque and they don’t require pectin. That’s because we’re not going to try and stiffen the recipe up. It’s meant to be spreadable and smooth.

What do I need to make this easy Crockpot peach butter recipe?

We’ll be using fresh peaches and your choice of sweetener. Peaches are pretty sweet so I’d recommend waiting until they’re cooked down and then add the sweetener a bit at a time until you reach the desired sweetness level.

You’ll need about 1 pound of peaches per pint of peach butter you want to make. Keep in mind that the peaches will cook down quite a bit so it might seem like you are starting with a ton, they’ll shrink!

How to make homemade peach butter:

We’ll need to start by cleaning and pitting the peaches. Cut them into quarters or halves depending on their size.

You can leave the skins on or take them off, whatever you prefer is fine. The skins will cook down just like the peaches so it’s really not extremely necessary to remove them.

Put the peaches into a blender or food processor until they’re more of a puree consistency.

Next place that into the slow cooker and turn it on low. Add your sugar or other sweetener and any spices you want to add. I also add a teaspoon of lemon juice.

Let them cook for about 4-6 hours. Stir them occasionally to make sure they don’t burn to the bottom or sides of the Crockpot.

If you want to add some spices to your peach butter you can! Cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger are a few that come to mind that would be great in this recipe.

How to store excess peach butter:

I think the easiest way is to just put it into freezer safe containers and freeze it for when I need more. It thaws out fine.

If you want to can it you can do that as well. You’ll need to start with sterilized jars, lids, and rings. Then leave about 1/4 inch headspace in your canning jars.

Water bath process them for about 10 minutes and let them seal. Once they’re sealed you can store them on the shelf or in the cupboard for quite a while!

You can also just make a smaller batch so you don’t have so much to deal with at the end…feel free to give some away as well! Everyone will love it and beg for refills!
