How Taylor fell in love with the Lake District (2024)

Anglophile and global pop sensationTaylor Swift has made no secret of the fact that she loves theLake District.

The singer, 34, who landed at Edinburgh airport yesterdayahead of the first concert on the UK leg of her Eras tour, firstwitnessed the natural beauty of the Windermere peaks in 2012 when she visited with then boyfriendHarry Styleswhilecelebrating her 23rd birthday.

The two young stars created a stir with locals as they were spotted in and around Cumbria, and even enjoyed a day out in picturesque Bowness.

Indeed, the emerald landscape made such an impression on the pop star that she went on toeulogise the nature-filled region in the poetic lyrics of her song 'The Lakes', which featured on her 2020 album Folklore.

She wrote:'Take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die. I don't belong, and my beloved, neither do you. Those Windermere peaks look like a perfect place to cry. I'm setting off, but not without my muse.'

The landscape of the Lake District has been a huge influence on some of England's best-known writers, such as William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge, Thomas de Quincey and John Ruskin.

They were known as the Romantic poets of the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, and were strongly influenced by the region's rustic beauty.

In an excerpt from her documentary, Long Pond Studio Sessions, Taylor spoke about the meaning behind her song 'The Lakes'.

Speaking to American musician Jack Antonoff in the clip from the TikTok page,Escape to the Lakes, the songstress, explained the motivation behind the song whichwas a bonus track on her 2020 album, Folklore.

Jack, her musical collaborator and friend, asked Taylor 'what is the Lake District?' to which she replied: 'It's in England and in the 19th Century it had a lot of poets. Like William Wordsworth and John Keats would spend a lot of time there and there was a poet district. These artists that moved there.

'So The Lakes is really talking a lot about relating to people that hundreds of years ago had the same exit plan and did it. I may not be able to go to the Lakes right now but I am going there in my head and the escape plan is working.

'The Lakes is the overarching theme of the whole album, trying to escape, or having something you want to protect your own sanity and saying look they did this hundreds of years ago, I'm not the first person who has felt this way, they did this.'

When The Lakes was released, the song received universal critical acclaim for its poetic and romantic style.
